Progestrogen Replacement

Progesterone Replacement Therapy (PRT) is a form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to supplement or replace the hormone progesterone in individuals who are deficient or have low levels. This is commonly due to menopause, certain medical conditions, or surgical removal of ovaries (oophorectomy).

When Is Progesterone Replacement Therapy Used?

  1. Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) Combined with oestrogen in women with a uterus to prevent endometrial hyperplasia (a risk of using oestrogen alone). To treat menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness.

  2. Luteal Phase Support in Fertility TreatmentsFor women undergoing IVF or other fertility treatments, to help support implantation and early pregnancy.

  3. Secondary AmenorrheaTo help restore menstrual cycles in women who are not menstruating due to hormonal imbalance.

  4. Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI)When ovarian function declines before age 40, PRT is used alongside oestrogen.

  5. Gender-Affirming Hormone TherapySometimes used in transgender women as part of feminising hormone therapy, although this is a debated and evolving area.
